Defrosting and Warming of Breast Milk

The breast milk can be defrosted in the refrigerator or at room temperature and thereafter it can be placed in a warm water bath or can be held under running lukewarm water unlit the milk reaches 37˚C. There are certain points that are required to be remembered before warming of milk.

Do not warm breast milk up in the microwave!


Breast milk should not be heated in the microwave. Breast milk may be separated during defrosting into aqueous and fatty parts. If the milk is carefully shakes, it will reunify these components. Small changes in color are not a reason for concern. The milk can still be used after heating. The defrosted breast milk should be used within twenty four hours.
